Germany: Berlin condemns rocket attack on US embassy in Baghdad

Germany, Berlin
January 27, 2020 at 16:03 GMT -00:00 · Published

Deputy Spokesperson of the German government Ulrike Demmer condemned Sunday's reported rocket attack on the US embassy in Baghdad, saying "it further inflames an already tense situation." Demmer was speaking at a weekly press conference in Berlin on Monday.

"[The] government strongly condemns the rocket attack on the US embassy in Baghdad. It is an irresponsible attack, which further inflames an already tense situation. At least one embassy employee was injured, which shows the gravity of the attack," she said.

"[We have] welcomed the condemnation of the Iraqi Prime Minister Abdul-Mahdi. All responsible parties in the government must do everything possible to avert a further escalation of the situation," she added.

German Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Adebahr meanwhile touched on the situation of German citizens in China amid the ongoing spread of coronavirus. She said the crisis team in the German Foreign Ministry were "intensively checking all options and we are also intensively looking into the option of an evacuation."

Commenting on the conflict in Libya, and allegations of ceasefire violations, Demmer said that "it was clear from the start that it would be a long process, and that the Berlin conference was [just] a first step.

"The important next step is going to be the joint meeting of the military committees in the 5+5 format, which is taking place this week. Basically we are calling simply for the participants of the Libyan conference to keep the commitments that they themselves have made," she added.
