Libya: Truce not respected since first night – GNA military commander

Libya, Tripoli
January 26, 2020 at 08:44 GMT +00:00 · Published

A military commander with the forces of Libya’s UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) told Ruptly that fighting near Tripoli continues despite an agreement brokered by world leaders at a peace conference in Berlin last weekend. Nassan Aamar was filmed in the Libyan capital on Saturday.

"There is no truce, absolutely, because it was signed by one side only, it's like a stillborn baby, therefore [General Khalifa] Haftar hasn't respected the truce and has violated it since the first night," said Aamar.

"The GNA, until this moment, remains committed to this truce; however we sometimes have to respond to the attacks carried out by Haftar's [LNA, Libyan National Army] militias on the axis of Tripoli," he said.

Fighting has been taking place around the Libyan capital since the LNA, which controls much of Libya's east and parts of the south, first launched an offensive to gain control of Tripoli from the GNA in April. The conflict eventually settled into a stalemate.

At the Berlin conference on January 19, world leaders agreed on upholding a UN arms embargo and implementing a ceasefire in Libya.
