Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte discussed his campaign against illegal drugs, relations with the United States and the future of Filipino-Russian relations, among other topics, in a wide ranging interview published by RT on Friday.

The president revealed he will decline the United States' invitation to attend the Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in March in Las Vegas.

He said he has hadn’t been to the US as a president yet, even though he had once received an invitation from President Barack Obama. Duterte stated he had turned down the offer by the Democratic president after being criticised by him.

Duterte as well responded to Washington regarding possible restrictions on Philippine officials entering the US.

He said that if Washington implements sanctions over the incarceration of Filipino Senator Leila de Lima, who has been under detention since February 2017, he “will not allow the Americans to enter into the Philippines without a visa.”

The president went on to criticise the US, stating that the Philippines’ closer ties with China and Russia are because of their respect to sovereignty.

"Because America continues to look us as a vassal state, because we were under the Americans for 50 years and they lived off the fat of the land before we got our independence," he said.

"If I cannot get a credible posture from the Americans, I can get it from the Russians and the Chinese government. It’s because they respect the sovereignty of the country which America is totally, totally lacking," he added.

The president also defended his stance on his war against drugs, saying that he had never ordered the military to kill drug dealers.

"I never said I will order the military to kill you. Never said it. You cannot find it in my statements anywhere. I said 'I will kill you.'"

He went on to talk about the Philippines’ economy and lack of jobs for the growing population.

"We want them to stay home, but the problem is the economy cannot absorb to give work to everybody, and that’s why we cannot also stop Filipinos from going out to seek the greener path," he said.

Duterte also criticised the Roman Catholic Church for its opposition to birth control, calling it “really very stupid at this time.”
