Daughter of late General Qasem Soleimani, Zeinab Soleimani, demanded the Iranian President Hassan Rouhani avenge her father's death, as Rouhani paid a personal visit to the general's family to offer condolences in Tehran on Saturday.

"Mr. Rouhani, my father would avenge his friends if their blood were shed. Now, who is avenging my father's blood?" said Zeinab in tears as she was comforted by her uncle, Soleimani's brother Sohrab Soleimani.

"Everyone will get revenge for the martyr's blood," assured Rouhani.

Soleimani and Ali Ebrahimi, also known as Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, were killed in a US airstrike at Baghdad's international airport in the early hours of Friday morning. Soleimani's body is expected to be transported to Tehran where another funeral will take place on Sunday, January 5, before being buried in his hometown of Kerman.

The Pentagon released a statement confirming the US had carried out the airstrike at the order of US President Donald Trump, calling it a "decisive defensive action to protect US personnel abroad.
