Argentina: Morales 'not afraid of detention' in possible Bolivia return for campaign role

Argentina, Buenos Aires

The former president of Bolivia Evo Morales held a press conference in Buenos Aires, five days after arriving in Argentina as a political refugee.

Morales spoke about the need for general elections in his country, despite confirming he will not run himself. He asked to be allowed to enter the country, however, as he has "the right to do politics" and contribute to his party's campaign.

"If I'm not allowed to enter, I'm going to find a way, accompanied by personalities, by the press, I'm going to go there and start campaigning," he said.

He also commented on a possible arrest scenario if he enters his country, stating that he was not afraid of a possible arrest since he had already been arrested and prosecuted previously.

The former leader also expressed his concern for possible fraud in the following elections.

"Now, in these elections, there can be real fraud. And my request is, notable experts, whether from the left or the right-wing, to just enforce the rules," he said.

Bolivia has been governed by a de facto government since Morales resigned after the controversial elections and receiving pressure from the armed forces. The resulting power vacuum saw the country descend into violence.

Morales travelled to Mexico and Cuba before receiving an offer of political asylum from the new Argentine government led by Alberto Fernandez.
