Saint Petersburg fashion designer upcycles old tires and banners into bags and clothing
It is becoming increasingly trendy to be environmentally friendly in Russia. Recent example – fashion designer from Saint Petersburg Sasha Polyarus who makes bags and clothes from automobile and bicycle cameras, seat belts and advertising banners.
Polyarus founded her brand and started the eco-project in 2014. According to Sasha, the idea came after a trip to Paris where she learned about the concept of recycling. Later, she got to know about a brand that upcycled truck covers into fashion accessories.
After raw materials, automobile and bicycle tires, are collected, they are washed and processed with a special alcoholic solution to degrease it.
Polyarus said it was quite difficult during the first four years, since people in Russia "were not ready for things related to recycling."
However, since 2018 being environmentally conscious has become more popular and "this direction is gaining momentum."
Her seven current employees are either involved in making the goods or promoting the brand, with the goal of developing it not only as a retail brand but even going in the wholesale direction.
Polyarus also cooperates with major brands and artists. "It's my time, at last," the eco-designer concluded.
