Russia: Putin pays respects to late former Moscow mayor Yury Luzhkov

Russian President Vladimir Putin came to Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow on Thursday, to pay his respects to the former mayor of the Russian capital, Yury Luzhkov.

Putin took the place next to Luhzhkov’s widow Elena Baturina and her daughters during the funeral service, which was conducted by Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill.

The funeral ceremony of the former Moscow mayor was also attended by politicians, scientists and cultural workers. At the end of the ceremony, the coffin bearing the body of Luzhkov was taken to the Novodevichy cemetery.

Former Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov died at Grosshadern Clinic in Munich on Tuesday where he was undergoing heart surgery.

The 83-year-old had served as the mayor of the Russian capital for 18 years between 1992 and 2010 until he was fired by then-president Dmitry Medvedev.

Luzhkov was considered one of the political heavyweights of his time who oversaw the transformation of Moscow from a Soviet city to a modern megapolis.
