Facial scan instead of passport check? New Beijing airport goes hi-tech to speed up travel
Beijing's sprawling new Daxing airport uses cutting-edge technology, including facial recognition scanners, to speed up the boarding of passengers.
Footage filmed in Beijing on Wednesday shows passengers checking in, using a facial recognition technology, which links their faces with their passports. The tech is also used in the purchase of duty free goods among other services.
The starfish-shaped airport, which officially opened in September, is expected to handle "over 100 million" travellers by 2040, according to Deputy General Manager of Planning and Design Wang Qiang.
The technology is to turn the travelling process paperless, allowing passengers to pass through turnstiles or customs, using their faces instead of boarding passes.
