Former mayor of the Russian capital city of Moscow Yury Luzhkov passed away in Munich on Tuesday morning, aged 83.

He died Tuesday morning in a German hospital, the Russian Embassy in Berlin said in a statement. Luzhkov was reportedly hospitalized there earlier for a planned surgery. As the former mayor lived in Europe during recent years, his family reportedly wants to hold his farewell ceremony in Germany. His relatives expressed the wish to then deliver his body to Russia in order to bury him in Moscow.

Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences in a telegram to Luzhkov’s relatives, describing him as “man of an outstanding personality, bright and courageous politician who was respected and trusted by Muscovites.”

Archive footage shows the late Luzhkov getting “For Merit to the Fatherland” medal from Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2016, the day after Luzhkov’s 80th birthday. Footage also shows the official at the numerous meetings with government officials as well as with the President Vladimir Putin.

Luzhkov, who was born in Moscow in 1936, became Moscow’s second mayor in 1992. After 18 years in office, he was dismissed on a loss-of-confidence basis by then-President Dmitry Medvedev September 2010.
