Germany: SPD seek renegotiation of climate deal with CDU and CSU

Germany, Berlin

Germany's newly elected Social Democratic Party (SPD) leadership announced plans to renegotiate a climate deal agreed with coalition partners the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Bavarian sister party Christian Social Union (CSU) on the second-day of a three-day conference in Berlin on Saturday.

Chancellor Angela Merkel secured a deal in the summer after six months of negotiations. Svenja Schulze, the German Minister for Environment, Conservation and Nuclear Safety , argued that the current "climate protection programme - all the measures - that the government has decided now, will not be enough."

Kai Niebert, President of the German Nature Conservation Union criticised the current climate deal for being unlikely to manage the impact of 1.5 or 2 [degrees], saying it was more likely to be 3.5 to 4 degrees. He also said that renegotiating with CDU and CSU was "not only necessary but vital."

The first day of the convention saw the official announcement of Saskia Esken and Norbert Walter-Borjans as the new leaders of the SPD party. They also disclosed their plans to continue the government coalition with CDU and CSU, despite previous threats to destabilise the coalition.
