USA: Florida governor says Saudis 'owe a debt' to Pensacola shooting victims
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said that Saudi Arabia owes a debt to the families of the Pensacola Naval Air Station shooting victims, after it was revealed that the attacker was a member of the Saudi Air Force who was on training at the US base. DeSantis spoke to journalists outside the base in Pensacola on Thursday.
"This is a dark day for a very great place. I think it not only strikes at the heart of the community here at northwest Florida, but throughout the navy nationwide and really around the world," said DeSantis.
"I think there's obviously going to be a lot of questions about this individual being a foreign national, being a part of the Saudi Air Force, and then to be here training on our soil, and to do this... And the FBI is working with DOD, they're working with the FDLE, they're working with the Escambia County Sheriff's to answer those questions," he said.
"One of the things that I talked to the president about is — given that this was a foreign national in the employ of a foreign service, and there will be time to do this but obviously, the government of Saudi Arabia needs to make things better for these victims. I think that they're going to owe a debt here, given that this was one of their individiuals," he added.
The gunman was killed by two deputies who were wounded in the fire exchange.
This is the second shooting at a US military base this week. On Wednesday, as US sailor killed two workers at the Pearl Harbor navy base.
