Bioplastic straw made of mango peel wins first place at science fair in Mexico City
Itzel Paniagua and Alondra Montserrat Lopez won the first prize at the University Fair of Science, Technology and Innovation in Mexico City for creating a straw made of mango peel and slime shells, as seen in footage shot on Tuesday.
Both students of the College of Sciences and Humanities (CCH) got inspired by a desire to do something for the environment.
"We realized what was happening in the world the truth began to come out the whole wave of the videos, the news about plastics and what we said is why not do something that helps the environment but also benefits us." said Alondra Montserrat Lopez. "It is like a normal straw only a little thicker with a colour between yellow and brown, it has a mango smell but in the drink it leaves no flavour."
The two students can be seen making the environmentally-friendly straws.
Their future plans include testing the straws for commercial potential and patenting the product.
