Wolf or dog? 18,000-year-old canine mummy presented in Yakutsk
An 18,000-year-old puppy recovered last year from Siberia’s permafrost was presented to the public in Yakutsk on Monday.
The director of the ‘Severnyi Mir’ museum, where the puppy’s remains are being held, said that that the canine’s fur, teeth and nose remain in remarkably good condition.
“This puppy has all limbs, fur and even whiskers. We can even clearly see its nose and teeth,” said Nikolai Androsov, director of the museum.
However, researches from the Centre for Palaeogenetics in Stockholm, who found the pup in 2018, cannot yet establish whether the canine is a dog or wolf or a mixture of the two.
This is not the first discovery of a canine mummy in Yakutia. In 2011 and in 2015 Siberian scientists discovered two 12,000-year-old dog mummies near the village of Tumat.
