Germany: Merkel and Guterres discuss Syria, Libya and climate crisis
German Chancellor Angela Merkel and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres talked about peace process efforts in Libya and Syria as well as the importance of CO2 neutrality by 2050 at a joint press conference on the sidelines of the 14th Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in Berlin on Tuesday.
"We need political changes in Syria, we need work on a new constitution. As only in this way it can be ensure that conditions are created in Syria, one day, where the many refugees can return from Jordan, from Lebanon, from Turkey and possibly also from Germany. Today this is not the case. And this is why I thank the United Nations for their efforts," said the German Chancellor.
Special UN envoys are mediating peace processes both in Syria and Libya, which is supported by Germany.
Guterres thanked Germany for the conference it is preparing in Berlin, calling it a "unique occasion to bring together all those that have an influence in relation to the country in Libya and to try to finally create the conditions for a ceasefire and for a political process able to bring peace to Libya" as "bringing peace to Libya contributes to the stabilisation of the whole Sahel and also to the better management of the movements of people in the region."
Merkel stated Germany's aim for Europe to be the first CO2 neutral continent by 2050 as climate reports are "worrisome".
The World Meteorological Organisation found levels of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere reached a new record high of 407.8 parts per million last year. Up from 405.5 in 2017 and "the rate of increase is not even slowing down."
The IGF is an annual meeting hosted in 2019 under the theme 'One World. One Net. One Vision' by the German Government in Berlin from 25 to 29 November to bring together people and aide discussions on public policy issues regarding the internet.
