Germany: Tractors block Berlin in agricultural policy dispute
Thousands of German farmers brought central Berlin to a standstill on Tuesday as part of their protest against the government's agricultural policy.
A reported 5,000 tractors headed towards the area around Brandenburg Gate, the heart of government headquarters.
Severe disruptions to bus services and increased traffic were expected.
Convoys of vehicles had been congregating outside the city on motorways and roads throughout the night.
Farmers are organising under the movement Land schafft Verbindung (countryside creates connection), with the backing of the German Farmers Association. The group claim stricter environmental protection laws, animal-welfare rules and fertiliser regulations threaten their livelihood.
