Bolivia's ousted former president Evo Morales spoke to his Ecuadorian ally Rafael Correo in the latest episode of 'Conversation with Correa' about the events unfolding in the Andean country and its causes.

Morales indicated in the interview the reasons which led to his overthrow were the struggle between classes and the country's lithium reserve, among other factors.

Bolivia has one of the largest reserves of lithium in the world, vital for the manufacture of long-lasting batteries and electric vehicles, and Morales has expressed his conviction that this fact had a significant influence on the situation in the country.

"I am very sure because a group of civic leaders of Potosi rejected our plan of lithium, which was planned for 2025: 41 plants, 14 of which were distinctly for the lithium industry. We already finished, last year we inaugurated the potassium chloride plant, we will start to mine 15,000 tonnes from September until the end of the year, we are expanding its exports, next year the large lithium carbonate plant was scheduled to be finished; 400 tonnes were planned for the pilot plant this year. One tonne of lithium carbonate costs more than $10,000. Lithium hydroxide. And in addition to that, lithium battery plants. It was in the plan. Other plants had to be only for inputs, and others for by-products. Food, pharmaceuticals, etc. A nice plan. And then this attack came, "he complained.

"Now I have realised that some industrialised countries do not want the competition. First, on the issue of technological liberation. And second, they do not accept that another economic model based on socialism, such as the so-called 'leftist progressives', sends another message that others will also follow and have solutions for our peoples," he said.

Morales and Correa have agreed that the "common denominator" which makes elites initiate attacks against leftist governments "is not being Indian, it is not being a worker, it is not coming from extreme poverty, it is that we challenge the system, is that with our governments they did not have power for the first time in history. "

The Bolivian ex-president has also indicated a type of strategy used by some business elites and pressure groups related to the opposition: religious discourse. "They used religion to produce hate, the Bible against the family," said Morales, who, as a Catholic, was "a little disappointed" to see how his rivals "use Jesus Christ to discriminate," and has classified it as "class struggle".

In reference to the report of the Organization of American States (OAS), Morales indicated that it reported irregularities during the elections of October 20, but "nowhere did it say that there is a fraud."

"I have nothing to hide, I have never hidden anything. And when there is a fraud, institutions, personalities, experts, agencies come to do an audit. We did an internal audit. There were some irregularities but we won in the first round, in all confident. And now, the OAS offered to come. But the OAS made a decision and its report is not based on a technical report, but on a political decision, "Morales said, adding that" instead of being it OAS, it must be called Organization of Northern States, better than America ”.

Morales recalled that when the "racist and fascist groups" moved towards some cities with the goal of carrying out a coup, "first, I summoned the parties that have parliamentary representation as a result of the October 20 elections. They rejected me. And second, on Sunday morning I said, 'Well, let them go to new elections, with new political actors, with a new Supreme Electoral Tribunal. And if they don't want [with] Evo, also without Evo Morales.'"

In addition, Morales revealed that he did not believe much "in this farce of fraud" given that "since October they began to say 'there will be fraud, there will be fraud' and even if we had won with more than 50 or 60 per cent, they would have disregarded the result regardless, I am convinced of that. It was important as I clarified in due course, to have more [observers] come. I am also convinced that if we really did a vote-by-vote, table-by-table, everyone, we won, "he concluded.

Regarding his current status, he has indicated that "legally" he is still the president of bolivia if they have not yet approved his resignation.
