Bolivia: Añez says Morales will face 'justice' on return

Bolivia's interim president, Jeanine Añez warned her predecessor Evo Morales that he would face justice if he were to return to Bolivia.

Añez held a press conference from the presidential palace, one day after stating that the Morales would not be allowed to stand in the upcoming presidential elections she intends to hold in Bolivia.

The interim president declared that "an electoral crime is pending and if president Morales comes confront us, he will confront the Bolivian justice system."

She also affirmed that her provisional Executive does not seek "revenge" nor does it have "revanchist intentions".

"I pledge to conduct transparent elections, I pledge to organise an electoral tribunal that has and offers the credibility that the country now needs," she added.

Last Sunday, indigenous leader Evo Morales announced his resignation from the Bolivian presidency after several weeks of protests following the dispute elections on October 20.

Morales, now in Mexico, said he was resigning so that Carlos Mesa and the opposition leader of the Santa Cruz Civic Committee, Luis Fernando Camacho, would put an end to the persecution of union leaders, stop inciting the burning of the houses of public officials and stop "kidnapping and mistreating" the families of indigenous leaders.
