Germany: Security tight ahead of 30th anniv. celebrations of Berlin Wall's fall
Security was tight at Berlin's Brandenburg Gate on Friday, with police putting roadblocks and barricade in place, as people gathered ahead of celebrations of the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
"It was a real liberation and I am happy that people do remember this 30 years after," said a contemporary witness after admitting he slept through the night of the November 9 1989.
The preparations were made ahead of Saturday's celebrations at the landmark, where thousands of people are expected to attend.
Numerous activities and installations have been organised throughout the German capital in the week leading up to the anniversary on November 9. The fall of the Berlin Wall came to symbolise the end of the Cold War and the ideological divide between Western Europe and the Eastern Bloc.
