Iran: Rouhani announces fourth stage of reducing nuclear deal commitments
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani announced in Tehran on Tuesday that the country will start injecting uranium gas into additional centrifuges, after initially doing so in September, as part of Iran's measures to step away from its commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also known as the Iranian nuclear deal.
"Our Atomic Organization, where I will declare the directives to the Atomic Energy Organization today, will take the fourth step; a new step tomorrow," said Rouhani, adding that the step would be taken under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Organization.
"Our fourth step, like the other three steps, is reversible. As a matter of fact, when they return to their all commitments, we will return to our obligations as well," assured Rouhani.
"There will be time for negotiations for the next two months again and we will talk and negotiate again. If we reach an acceptable solution on the lifting sanctions on oil and metal, until we can easily sell our oil, if we could easily use our money in trade transactions, then we would fully return to the previous conditions [with respect to the level of our JCPOA obligations]," he added.
Rouhani reportedly announced the fourth step would involve injecting uranium gas into another 1,044 centrifuges.
The United States annouced they would leave the nuclear deal last May, prompting Tehran to lower its compliance with the JCPOA, saying the European signatories had failed to uphold their commitments.
