Pakistan: At least 74 killed in train fire after gas canister explosion
At least 74 people were reportedly killed and more than 40 injured after a train travelling between the Pakistani cities of Karachi and Rawalpindi caught fire near the town of Rahim Yar Khan on Thursday.
The blaze was caused by the explosion of a gas cylinder while passengers were cooking breakfast on a stove on the Tezgam Express train, according to reports citing Pakistani Railways Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmad.
Ahmad said most deaths were the result of people jumping off the train to escape the fire, which reportedly destroyed three carriages that were holding more than 200 passengers.
Footage shows firefighters and Pakistan Army soldiers on the scene of the fire helping with rescue operations, with an army helicopter reaching the scene. Footage also shows injured people being tended to in a local hospital.
