Maria Butina, a Russian national convicted of being an unregistered foreign agent in the US, thanked Russian journalists and diplomats for support and commented on prison conditions in the USA, speaking to RT in Moscow on Saturday.

“In the beginning, they didn't show me the news. I could not probably handle it. Especially in the early days, when I was in prison in Washington. And then, when our diplomats began to bring summaries, they wrote here, RT takes something off and writes about me - very strong support," said Butina.

She also commented on the prison conditions in the US and on the treatment by the media.

"I was hated by everyone in the US. Especially, you know, it was scary when I was in the Washington prison, and my ugliest pictures were chosen, or some of the shows were arranged on TV. And I couldn’t even turn it off. I was forced to watch it. There were all the guards who gathered and watched all of it. It was very hard.”

Maria Butina departed from Miami’s airport after she was released from prison in Tallahassee, Florida on Friday after having served 15 months of an 18-month sentence.

Butina founded the Russian gun-rights organisation Right to Bear Arms in 2011 and was involved in the National Rifle Association (NRA), a powerful gun-rights lobby in US politics. She moved to the United States on a student visa in 2016 and was arrested on July 2018 on charges of being an unregistered foreign agent of the Russian Federation, for which she was convicted in April 2019.
