In an exclusive interview aired on RT's "SophieCo" Show on Friday, Spanish opera singer Placido Domingo shared his views on opera, popular culture and talked about the role of music in human life.

Domingo was of the opinion that opera as an art would always exist.

"They feel with the same passion like the young people. Today they [young people] love all the pop music, all the rock music whatever is the time and so I think that the opera will be… It will live forever. I think as long as we have some kind of romanticists. And we really feel it", the tenor said.

During the interview, Domingo promoted his new competition 'Operalia' which will meet annually and aim to find opera talents.

“Every year we have winners, and they come from all around the globe,” he added.

The Spaniard also stressed the role of performance in modern opera and views it as something, which makes opera more attractive for public.

"In the old times the opera singers just would be in front of the stage, and they wouldn’t move. But that has been changing and in the last 50 years, which I have been singing, the public really sees a wonderful show with music, acting, lighting, costumes like a very big thing. I defend that, and I know that everyday people will love more and more opera", he underlined.

The singer-cum-conductor believes that the perception of the music depends on both the manner of the performance and personality.

"We are all different. We all have to sing the same music, but everybody will be different. Everybody will touch you in a different way. The music is the same, but the interpretation and the quality of every voice - it makes a different moment, a different discovery", he said.

The award-winning tenor found success as a crossover artist picking up Grammys for collaborations with Latin and pop singers.

With a career spanning half a century, Domingo has performed 150 leading opera parts, more than any other opera singer. He performs in Italian, French, German, Spanish, English and Russian, taking his voice to some of the most famous opera houses in the world.

Earlier this year, Domingo was accused by multiple women of sexual harrassment. The allegations relate to his time when he held top positions at leading opera companies. The Spanish singer maintains his innocence.

Domingo gave a concert in Moscow on Thursday accompanied by the State Symphony Orchestra "Novaya Rossiya". Notable pieces were "Besame Mucho" and "Moscow Nights".
