Spain: Young man knocked down and injured by police van in Tarragona
A 17-year-old male was injured after being hit by a van of the Mossos d'Esquadra (the autonomous police force of Catalonia) on Wednesday night as protests continued after Spain's Supreme Court handed down prison sentences to Catalan pro-independence leaders.
The incident occurred when security forces faced off with independence activists at Tarraco Square in Tarragona.
Images show police vans advancing against the protesters. The injured young man is seen lying on the ground with other activists trying to help him after the collision.
Other violent incidents broke out between riot police and protesters during clashes.
The injured young man reportedly suffered a head injury and is currently in the hospital Joan XXIII receiving medical treatment.
Protests began on Monday, after Spain's Supreme Court jailed nine politicians for between nine and 13 years for their role in the Catalonia's secession attempt and an outlawed independence referendum. Three other leaders were found guilty of disobedience and escaped jail time.
