Spain: Thousands block roads on “March for Freedom” heading for Barcelona
Around 10,000 people filled the C-17 road from Vic to Barcelona on Wednesday, according to local sources.
Activists waved flags and chanted slogans rejecting the Supreme Court's verdict jailing Catalan politicians and in support of Catalan independence leaders. Several farmers joined the march with their tractors.
The end goal is to reach Barcelona, spending the night at the pre-arranged points in Garriga and Sant Quirze del Valles, as designated by the organisers.
The “March for Freedom" has other columns starting from different points of Tarragona, Girona and Lleida, the three other Catalan provinces along with Barcelona.
A day earlier, hundreds gathered in front of the Delegation of the Government of Spain in Barcelona to reject the sentencing of nine Catalan independence leaders to prison terms of between 9 and 13 years for their role in the autonomous region's attempt to secede in 2017. Some activists with covered faces threw stones and other objects at riot police and tried to break the police cordon in order to access the government building.
