Spain: Police face massive crowds of protesters in Barcelona
Spanish police faced massive crowds of protesters in Barcelona on Monday night, in the wake of the Spanish Supreme Court sentencing Catalan separatist leaders to up to 13 years in prison.
Police in riot gear were seen leaving after a standoff with the massive crowd, as thousands of protesters gathered in the streets of the Spanish capital.
The protests were triggered by Spanish Supreme Court's decision to sentence former Catalan Vice President Oriol Junqueras to 13 years in prison for his role in the 2017 secession attempt.
Junqueras was among nine Catalan independence leaders who were sentenced to between nine and 13 years in prison for sedition for their part in the region's failed 2017 independence bid, which captured headlines around the world.
