Spain: Thousands protest in Barcelona after Catalan leaders’ verdict announced
Thousands gathered in Barcelona's Placa Sant Jaume to protest against the sentences handed down to Catalan leaders by Spain’s Supreme Court on Monday.
The President of the Generalitat, Quim Torra, and the President of the Catalan Parliament, Roger Torrent, both attended the rally called by the Catalan National Assembly (ACN), the Defence Committees of the Catalan Republic (CDR) and other pro-independence organisations.
Former Catalan Vice President Oriol Junqueras has been sentenced to 13 years in prison by Spain's Supreme Court for his role in the attempted secession by authorities in Barcelona in 2017. Junqueras was among nine Catalan independence leaders who were sentenced to between nine and 13 years in prison for sedition for their part in the region's failed 2017 independence bid.
