USA: Pentagon announces additional troop deployments to Saudi Arabia

United States, Washington DC
October 11, 2019 at 22:09 GMT +00:00 · Published

US Special Representative for Iran Brian Hook announced that the Pentagon will deploy additional troops to Saudi Arabia during a press conference at the US State Department in Washington DC on Friday, the announcement comes after Saudi oil facilities were damaged in a drone attack on September 14.

"Today the Defense Department announced the deployment of additional U.S. forces to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Secretary Pompeo and Secretary Esper have had many talks with the Saudis and those discussions intensified after the Iranian attack on Saudi Arabia on September 14," Hook said.

He added that after bilateral talks between the US and Saudi Arabia an additional 3000 troops will be sent to the region.

"This administration does not seek conflict with Iran. We have been equally clear to the regime that we will defend our citizens forces and interests including against attacks by Iran or its proxies. We stand with our partners and our allies to safeguard global commerce and regional stability," he also stated.

Hook went on to urge Iran that it must change the way it behaves or "watch its economy crumble."

Houthi rebels operating in Yemen claimed responsibility for the drone attack on the Saudi Aramco oil facilities, however the US and Saudi Arabia have both placed the blame on Iran, with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo calling the attack an 'act of war.' Tehran has since denied any involvement in the attack.
