UN: Russian envoy urges 'maximum restraint' in northern Syria
Russia's ambassador to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya urged all sides to exercise maximum restraint in Turkey's operation in northern Syria, in a statement at the UN headquarters in New York City on Thursday.
"All sides should exercise maximum restraint during that operation," he said. "We were calling upon Turkey and Syria to engage in a dialogue in accordance with the Adana agreement of 1998, and it's regrettable that it was not done; I think that's the best way. The best way is to engage in direct dialogue."
He also blamed the situation on "demographic engineering" by members of the US-led coalition against ISIS, saying, "The Kurdish [are] reaping the fruit of the demographic policies in that part of Syria."
Erdogan announced on Wednesday the beginning of the operation to create a 'safe zone' cleared of the formerly US-backed Kurdish groups, who are considered 'terrorists' by Ankara.
