Hong Kong: 'We only clamped down on violence' - Chief Secretary for Administration

The Chief Secretary for Administration of Hong Kong Matthew Cheung, said that the government never clamped down on protests but violence, during a press conference in Hong Kong on Thursday.

Speaking alongside the Secretary for Transport and Housing Department Frank Chan Fan, Matthew Cheung addressed the journalists regarding the ongoing anti-government demonstrations and the vandalisation of several MTR [Mass Transit Railway] stations which had led to the partial closure of the train network.

"Protest if it is legal, if it is lawful if it is peaceful, in Hong Kong assembly protest is part of Hong Kong landscape, is part of our core value," said Cheung.

"We do disagree, disapprove of violence, particularly unlawful assemblies. Breaking the law intentionally in the process, it's not what we want to see", the Chief Secretary added.

The demonstrations, sparked by a since-withdrawn extradition bill which drew hundreds of thousands to take to the streets in March, have turned increasingly violent in recent weeks as protesters began destroying businesses owned by pro-Beijing residents.
