UK: Extinction Rebellion activists removed by police after London City Airport sit-in
Police officers removed several Extinction Rebellion (XR) demonstrators as they staged a sit-in blocking the arrivals and departures entrances of London City Airport on Thursday, where they called for a halt to future expansion plans and action to combat climate change.
Protesters can be seen holding signs and banners, as they disrupted the regular functioning of the airport, with some of the demonstrators reaching the roof of the building and unfolding flags. Police officers carrying away demonstrators and removing the flags can also be spotted, with some 50 arrests reportedly being made.
The demonstration against the climate impact of flying and the government's support for airport expansion, is part of a worldwide series of protests organised by XR that has seen more than 1,000 activists arrested in the UK alone.
