Turkey: Trial of femicide victim 'Mulut' sees protest outside court
The feminist movement and victims family members demonstrated outside Kirikkale Palace of Justice on Wednesday as the trial into the murder of 38-year-old Emine Bulut opened.
Bulut's former husband, 43-year-old Fedai Varan, is accused of killing her. Varan, who is facing a life sentence, was moved to the court earlier in the day under heavy security.
"Emine Bulut was killed in front of people, her own child. But the painful truth is that she was not the only murdered one," said Mustafa Damar, father of femicide victim Ceren Damar.
Bulut was fatally stabbed in front of her daughter in a cafe on August 18. Her murder was captured on video and shared on social media, triggering a debate over a mounting violence against women.
Bulut's last words caught on video "I don't want to die" have been used as a hashtag on Turkish social media to campaign against domestic violence.
