Brazilian grandfather creates vitiligo DOLLS for kids with skin disorder
Sixty-four year-old Brazilian grandfather Joao Stanganelli Junior became known for crocheting dolls to comfort children with the rare skin disorder vitiligo. Footage shows Stanganelli showing off his crochet doll collection from his hometown of Braganca Paulista, on Friday.
Wanting to help children who suffering from Vitiligo like himself himself, Stanganelli said "I know the pain, not the physical pain, the emotional pain, the pain of the imaginative prejudice of people's discrimination,"
Stanganelli suggests how difficult but important it is to find acceptance in others, adding "they think you are different, in reality, we are all different, and we are similar in our differences."
Everything started as a challenge. Joao wanted to leave his granddaughter something to remember him, so his wife suggested to sew a doll that appeared just like him. The man learned the technique in just five days and soon after, the popularity of the dolls jumped beyond his friend circle, and the grandfather started receiving orders representing other differences, including dolls in wheelchairs and with hearing aids.
Vitiligo is a skin condition characterised by a loss of pigmentation in blotches on the skin. Nearly one percent of the Earth's population is living with this skin pigmentation disorder.
