UN: Sudan's PM calls for removal from state terrorism list and end to sanctions

United Nations, New York City
September 28, 2019 at 03:52 GMT +00:00 · Published

Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok called for lifting international sanctions against his country and called on the US to remove Sudan from its list of state sponsors of terrorism, during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly in New York City on Friday.

"The Sudanese people has never been a sponsor or a supporter of terrorism," Hamdok said. "It was the regime, the former regime, that supported terrorism and the Sudanese people have revolted against it."

"We call on the United States to remove Sudan from the list and to stop punishing the people of Sudan for crimes committed by the former regime," Hamdok added. "We hope that our request will be welcomed and approved so that we can accelerate our reconstruction and development efforts to erase of the traces of the past three decades under the former regime."

In closing, Hamdok said Khartoum was "committed to achieving the goals of our revolution, translating our legitimate aspirations into reality so that the Sudan over the three coming years can regain its natural status befitting our civilisation and our history."

Long-time Sudanese leader Omar Al-Bashir was ousted in a coup on April 11 this year. On the same day protesters flooded the area outside the Defence Ministry demanding transition to civilian rule, leading to a months-long stand-off and outbreaks of violence.

On August 21 Hamdok, a former deputy executive secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Africa, was sworn in as the Sudan's first post-Bashir prime minister.
