Germany: Nord Stream 2 'will be built' despite US sanctions - MP Ernst
The European Court of Justice directive to limit Gazprom's access to the Opal pipeline in East Germany is likely to be contested, the chairman of Bundestag Committee on Economic Affairs and Energy, Klaus Ernst, told Ruptly in Berlin, Friday, on the sidelines of the conference devoted to Russian sanctions problematic.
Leaving the event called 'Five years of Russia sanctions. How can we escape the mutual blockade,' the MP stressed that despite the sanctions, the Nord Stream 2 pipeline would be completed, but would become more expensive than planned due to the US Sanctions threat:
"I think the American interests in this connection are very clear. They aim to sell their own gas and energy to Europe and to do that, it is necessary to disrupt the economic relations between Europe and Russia and Germany and Russia."
Klaus Ernst concluded that German businesses are the most affected by the sanctions among the European partners, stating: "after five years it is time to ask the question 'What is the actual effect?' And other than disadvantages for the Federal Republic of Germany and Germany's businesses - nothing."
On Wednesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared to US President Donald Trump that the completion of Nord Stream 2 is a threat to Ukraine as it means the graduate removal of anti-Russian sanctions.
