Afghanistan: At least 30 killed, 40 injured in US airstrike in Nangarhar – officials
At least 30 civilians were killed and more than 40 were injured in a US drone attack targeting a hideout of the so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) in mountainous Wazir Tangi area in eastern Nangarhar province on Wednesday night, according to Afghani officials, as footage filmed on Thursday shows.
The injured, mostly workers who had been collecting pine nuts before the attack, were seen being treated in Nangarhar Regional Hospital and Khogyani District Hospital.
"The workers were there collecting pine nuts, and the drone targeted them, all of them were either killed or wounded, some of them taken to the hospitals and some of them still in the area", said Shir Zaman, a relative of one of the victims.
Ruptly asked the NATO Resolute Support mission in Afghanistan Colonel Sonny Leggett to confirm the reports.
"US forces conducted a precision strike against Da'esh (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) terrorists in Nangarhar early this morning," said the United States Forces-Afghanistan spokesman Leggett.
"We are aware of allegations of the death of non-combatants and are working with local officials to determine the facts."
Earlier on Thursday, at least 30 people were killed and more than 90 were injured after a suicide car bomb exploded outside a hospital in Qalati Ghilji in the southern province of Zabul.
