Honduras: Environmental activists confront police over construction project
Police fired tear gas on environmental activists throwing objects at them in the El Hatillo area, north of the capital of Honduras, Tegucigalpa on Tuesday. Hundreds of demonstrators protested against the construction of a luxury housing complex in La Tigra National Park.
The project triggered protests more than a week ago with activists calling the park 'the lungs of the capital'. They accused the government of launching a campaign of harassment against them.
"There are death threats. Therefore, we are going to denounce [violence] before human rights organizations because I have already identified the individual who threatened me. I am very sorry but I already have two [police officers] denounced in court and we'll go for the third [court case]," said Pedro Amador, one of activists.
Protesters say they will continue demonstrations until the construction project is canceled.
