Opposition activist Alexei Navalny allegedly left the country on Friday, September 13, after police searched offices of his Anti-Corruption Foundation. According to media reports, he at first took a flight to Helsinki to then headed to the United States together with his family. On his Instagram account, Navalny wrote that he went to accompany his daughter to school.

On September 12, the Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK) reported that police carried out raids at its offices in more than 40 cities nationwide. The searches came after Russia’s Investigative Committee opened a criminal case against the organisation over an alleged money laundering scheme.

Commenting on police operations, Navalny claimed they came in response to the results of regional elections that took place in Russia on September 8. A number of opposition politicians won in the voting that took place in various regions.

Press Secretary for President of Russia Dmitri Peskov said that that the Kremlin is aware of the police operations that were carried out, but is not familiar with Navalny’s allegations on them.
