Ahmadinejad comments on US sanctions, nuclear program

Former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad spoke of ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, the Israeli-Palestinian settlement, the Iranian nuclear program and US sanctions in during an exclusive interview with RT host and former Ecuadorian president Rafael Correa, recorded on August 29.

During the conversation, Ahmadinejad said that Western and particularly US interests in the Middle East stem from the region's large energy resources.

"Whoever wants to impose himself on the world must have large energy deposits. Therefore, the United States, England and others have a special focus on the Middle East," he said.

He went on to comment on US sanctions on his country, and efforts to hinder their nuclear program.

"So why are they opposing our progress on the pretext of the nuclear bomb? It is because they want us to be weak, they want us to hold us back, they want us to need them, so that they can impose themselves on us," Ahmadinejad said.

"Can you really believe that Americans care about humanity and world peace? If they really care, let them destroy their own atomic bombs first. Does the logic of the U.S. saying, 'I must have them, but others must not,' have any other purpose than to maintain hegemony?" The former Iranian President added.

Ahmadinejad also compared Iran's situation with other countries in the world, particularly Venezuela, saying:

"The poverty of Africa and Latin America is a product of neo-colonialism. Why is the United States now putting pressure on the Venezuelan Government? Are they worried about the people of Venezuela… It is crystal clear that what they are looking for is Venezuela's oil, not human rights in Venezuela, just as they are behind the wealth of Africa and Latin America."

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad served as the sixth president of Iran and was a strong supporter of Iran's nuclear program, and became known internationally as a vocal critic American and Israeli foreign policy.
