Venezuela: Prosecutor to investigate Guaido for alleged Esequibo territory negotiations
The Venezuelan Public Prosecutor's Office opened an investigation against opposition leader Juan Guaido and his associates Vanessa Neumann and Manuel Avendano for the alleged negotiation to hand over the Esequibo territory, currently in a dispute with Guyana, to transnational corporations and the United States Government. The announcement was made by Venezuelan Attorney General Tarek William Saab at the Caracas Public Prosecutor's Office on Friday.
Saab said the defendants participated in "illegal negotiations, behind the back of the country, which seeks to desist from Venezuela's historic claim to the Esequibo territory" with the aim of gaining "political support from the United Kingdom. For an obviously buffoonish, circus, non-existent, ghostly virtual presidency.
The Esequibo territory is a 160,000 square kilometer area rich in minerals and forests, located in southeastern Venezuela. Oil fields were recently found there, which having a geographical position with access to the Caribbean Sea and the delta of the Orinoco River makes it a place of interest. It was controlled by the Spanish Empire, the Dutch Empire and finally by the British Empire, which committed itself in 1897 with Venezuela to resolve the dispute in international tribunals.
