Robert Mugabe the Zimbabwean revolutionary leader and first elected post-independence prime minister has died aged 95, in a hospital in Singapore on Friday, where the Pan-Africanist leader was undergoing medical treatment.
Archive footage shows the late Zimbabwean leader at various events during the last few years of his life, including at a graduation ceremony for Zimbabwean students and his 92nd birthday celebrations.
Mugabe led the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) while in prison fighting for the independence of Zimbabwe, formerly the British Crown colony of Southern Rhodesia. In 1979, he took part in peace negotiations with the United Kingdom, ending the Rhodesian Bush War and leading to the creation and recognition of the independent Republic of Zimbabwe.
In 1980, the country held it's first general election where Mugabe was elected as the first prime minister and after 1987, as President of Zimbabwe.
The news was announced by the current president of Zimbabwe Emmerson Mnangagwa, who tweeted earlier saying "Cde Mugabe was an icon of liberation, a pan-Africanist who dedicated his life to the emancipation and empowerment of his people. His contribution to the history of our nation and continent will never be forgotten. May his soul rest in eternal peace."
