Hong Kong: 'No debate, no voting' - Extradition bill to be withdrawn - Carrie Lam

The Chief Executive of Hong Kong Carrie Lam assured that there would be no formal discussions or voting when the controversial extradition bill is formally withdrawn in front of the legislative council, during a press conference on Wednesday.

"I noticed that there are still some worries about this particular procedure. I want to iterate here that the sole purpose of the legislative procedure is to withdraw the bill. This involves the Secretary for Security as the responsible government official to announce in the legislative council that bill will be withdrawn. There will be no debate, and no voting," Lam said.

The Chief Executive also pledged her support to the Independent Police Complaints Council, set up to investigate police actions during the protests, which was one of the primary alleged grievances motivating activists.

"We will reach out to the community to start a direct dialogue. People from all walks of life, with different stances and backgrounds are invited to share their views and air their grievances. We must find ways to address the discontent in society and look for solutions," Lam added.

Lam announced yesterday that the proposed bill will be formally withdrawn. The bill would have allowed the extradition of Hong Kong's residents to mainland China for trials and sparked weeks of protests, which evolved into a movement with wider grievances against the Hong Kong administration.
