Colombia: FARC issues apology and expels members after ‘delusional’ call to arms

Colombia, Bogota
August 30, 2019 at 02:08 GMT -00:00 · Published

The leaders of the Common Alternative Revolutionary Force (FARC) said they 'feel shame' after former bloc commander Ivan Marquez's announcement that some of ex-combatants will take up arms and continue to fight guerrilla warfare, at a press conference in Bogota on Thursday.

FARC party leader Rodrigo Londono, also known as ‘Timochenco,’ apologised ‘to the Colombian people and the international community’ while calling Marquez and his allies’ announcement a ‘delusional mistake.’

Londono also wanted to make it clear that ‘the signatories of the speech publicly broke with our party,’ and that the members of his party remain willing ‘to give everything for peace and social justice.’

Colombian President Ivan Duque assured the nation that this is not the birth of a new guerrilla force, but "in the face of criminal threats from a gang of narco-terrorists who have the shelter and support of the dictatorship of Nicolas Maduro” offered “three billion Colombian pesos [approx. one million USD] for each person who appears in the video broadcast from the early hours of Thursday morning.”

Patricia Linares, president of the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) of Colombia, said on Thursday that members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia who decide to take up arms will lose the benefits established by the peace agreement signed in Havana in 2019.
