Russia: Roscosmos commission to assess ISS after docking system failure

A special commission will be created to assess the International Space Station’s (ISS) state, Russian space agency Roscosmos head Dmitri Rogozin said in Korolyov on Tuesday.

Speaking after the Russian unmanned Soyuz MS-14 spaceship managed to dock with the ISS on second attempt, Rogozin stated that the spaceship's first bid to dock on Saturday failed due to the malfunction of rendezvous equipment in the original docking port.

“We saw that this MIM-2 [small research module ‘Poisk’], its equipment, indeed, did not respond to the ship’s signals, but this equipment is 10 years old and it is not made in Russia,” he said.

Rogozin added that the most important part of the test was “the bundle of a spaceship and Soyuz-2.1a rocket” in order to begin manned launches from Baikonur in October.

The Soyuz MS-14, carrying the Russian humanoid robot Skybot F-850, nicknamed FEDOR, docked with the ISS on Tuesday morning.

The AI-equipped robot, which is scheduled to stay at the ISS until September 7, will monitor and report on conditions during the space mission.
