Iran's president Hassan Rouhani said Tehran favoured talks to solve a stand-off with the US but warned that sanctions must be lifted first. Rouhani was speaking at a foreign affairs ministry meeting in Tehran on Tuesday.

"We have mentioned it many times and now we highlight it again that Islamic Republic of Iran favours negotiation. And if the US really wants to have negotiation, it should lift all sanctions before doing anything else," said Rouhani.

Iran's president backed foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif who was put under US sanctions last week. "For instance, we would like to negotiate tomorrow. Who will negotiate? The person for negotiations is the foreign minister and he is the one who has to speak with you, if we intend to do so one day," said Rouhani.
