Kosovo Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj announced his resignation in Pristina on Friday, after being summoned for questioning by an EU-backed war crimes court in the Hague.
"I just held a meeting with AAK party together with the members of council where I informed my AAK colleagues, the party that I lead, of my resignation," Haradinaj said when speaking to the press.
"The reason of my resignation is the invitation from the Special Court for an interview. It would be very hard and insulting and humiliating to go there as a Prime Minister of Kosovo, to disrespect the position of the Prime Minister in front of investigators. In this case I will go as a citizen," he added.
Haradinaj was the former commander of the Kosovo Albanian rebel group, known as the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), and was previously arrested on charges of committing war crimes during the Kosovo War. KLA is designated as a terrorist organisation by Serbia.
Haradinaj has faced trial in The Hague twice; both times receiving acquittals. He served as prime minister of Kosovo in the period between 2004 and 2005, and again from 2017 until his resignation on Friday.
