UK: Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt go head to head in leadership debate

United Kingdom, London

Former UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and current UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt went head to head on issues of Brexit, Iran, and relations with the US during the final debate of the Tory leadership contest in London on Monday.

Prime Ministerial hopeful Jeremy Hunt called Britain’s failure to leave the EU on the stipulated date of March 31 “the worst moment in British politics in the last year,” but said he disagreed with Johnson’s “do-or-die” approach of leaving the EU on October 31, without a deal if necessary.

“Boris is guaranteeing something that he knows neither he nor I can truly guarantee, because we don't know what Parliament will do. We don't have a majority in Parliament," he said.

Johnson seemingly backtracked from previous remarks about British diplomat Kim Darroch, who resigned after cables were leaked revealing unflattering comments about the Trump administration. The former foreign secretary had previously been accused of not backing Darroch, but Johnson said on Monday that all diplomats had the “four-square support” of the British government.

US President Donald Trump’s recent remarks directed at four non-white congresswomen who testified against migration detention centres were also the subject of scrutiny during the debate, with both candidates denouncing the comments as unacceptable.

“I think it was totally unacceptable in a modern, multi-racial country which you're trying to lead,” Johnson said.

When pressed on whether they thought the comments amounted to racism, however, both Johnson and Hunt hesitated to respond.

Johnson also ruled out Britain agreeing to go to war with Iran if under his leadership if the US requested it, asserting that diplomacy and de-escalation were the way forward in the US-Iran crisis.
