Algeria: Protesters fill the streets for 21st week demanding old guard's resignation

Crowds of Algerians hit the streets of Algiers on Friday, for the 21st consecutive week, to protest against Algeria's interim government and demand an overhaul of the country's ruling system.

Protesters marched through the capital's streets waving the Algerian flag and calling for a "civilian, not a military state."

Many blamed the authoritarian rule, as a journalist who joined the protest. "There has never been justice in Algeria since 1962, because all the powers which followed one another were dictatorial powers."

Protesters were also asking for the establishment of independent institutions to oversee new elections.

A politician warned that Algeria does not respect the rule of law, and accused the authorities of opposing the democratic process. "There isn't independence of the judiciary, and they don't want to come around an actual democratic process in Algeria. That is to say, to go towards a transition and a second republic as the people are demanding."

Friday's protest took place as interim President Abdelkader Bensalah kept his post, despite his mandate expired on Tuesday. Authorities postponed a presidential election expected for July 4, mentioning a lack of candidates.
