Classmates of the deceased submariner Dmitri Solovyov recalled their friend, with whom they had studied for 10 years at a school in the city of Pochep, in the Bryansk region.

Roman Kruglyakov said on Thursday: “Dmitri was my classmate for 10 years, he was an example of a true friend, a true classmate. He was goal-oriented, striving for life-goals. He was humorous, was at the centre of all activities. As a result, he is remembered that way.”

According to his childhood friend Anna, “he was a good man, a very good friend, classmate. Very literate, very fond of physics. He helped us, did laboratory work. He was responsible, purposeful."

According to the MoD, a deep-water research vehicle belonging to the Russian Navy was conducting a bathymetric measurement operation on Monday, in Russian territorial waters in the Barents Sea, when a fire broke out on board.

The crew managed to extinguish the flames, but 14 seamen died due to suffocation by smoke inhalation. Dmitri Solovyev rescued a civilian specialist from a compartment of the deep-water submersible.

“Immediately after getting the civilian specialist out of the compartment, Dmitri Soloviev sealed the hatch to prevent the fire from spreading through the whole deep-water vessel. The officer then continued to fight for the existence of the ship in the compartment, along with other crew members,” the ministry said.

Such an act didn’t come as a surprise to his friends: “we, his classmates, are not surprised that at such a moment he was not taken aback, he did everything that was required of him, everything that was possible, and saved a person," said Roman Kruglikov.
