Italy: Florence crowds bid farewell to fallen YPG fighter Lorenzo Orsetti
A commemoration ceremony was held in Florence for Lorenzo Orsetti, the 33-year old Italian volunteer who was killed in Syria while fighting for the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) in March, in his native Florence on Sunday, ahead of Monday's private funeral.
Orsetti, also known as "Orso" or by his Kurdish name "Tekoser," fought against the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) and Turkish-backed rebels in Afrin in January 2018 and was reportedly killed in action in Syria's Baghouz on March 18.
"We are very happy that Lorenzo's death and life made him known among the Italian people," said Orsetti's father, Alessandro Orsetti.
Residents, family and Kurdish people from the local association Comitato Kurdistan Toscana followed the casket in procession, ahead of a vigil held inside a community centre in Florence.
Orsetti will be laid to rest at a private funeral service on Monday.
