UK: Pensioners protest outside BBC offices over loss of free TV licence

Pensioners gathered in front of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) offices in London and Leeds on Friday to protest against the scrapping of free TV licences for the over 75s.

The protest was initiated by the National Pensioners Convention amid an announcement earlier this month by the BBC of a plan to abolish TV licences for over 75s from June 2020 onwards. Pensioners would then have to pay the annual fee of £154.50 (€173.02).

Pensioners were seen holding signs reading "Don't switch us off! Government should fund the over 75s' TV licence! Shame on the BBC!"

One pensioner said that "this government does not care about poor people. It's also stirring up the media that the old people are layabouts, rested on the rest of the community, which is a load of nonsense. But we are one of the poorest groups of pensioners in the whole of Europe."

Another pensioner stated the importance of a free TV licence for the elderly by saying that "there are many old people, and people with mobility problems, who need the television to keep them in contact with the outside world."

Under this new plan, only the elderly receiving pension credit - available to single pensioners who are on less than £167.25 (€187.25) a week or couples on £255.25 (€285,81) - will be able to claim a free TV licence.
